The skyrocketing cost of eggs in the wholesale and retail markets for last few days has been making people worried. In most of the shops, an egg is being sold for 7. Shortage in supply of eggs is the major reason for the hike in prices.

Usually, the prices increase in December but this year, the prices started going up by early November. Moreover, the supply of eggs by the poultry industry fails to meet the demand of the market.

Consumption of eggs has gone up because of intensified awareness campaign on its advantages and its nutritional values. Government and private hostels and midday meals scheme in schools is mandatorily supplying eggs twice a week. In addition, individual consumption of eggs has also increased. People prefer to have eggs in large quantity in winter season. As a result, the prices will increase in this season.

Speaking to this correspondent, District Consumers Information Centre chairman M. Rajeshwar said that even vegetarians prefer to eat eggs. Due to its low cost and high nutritional values, people prefer to eat either boiled eggs or omelettes, he said.
